A year ago the SA National Society circulated a request from Prof Bill Guest asking former alumni of the University to provide information which would enable him to finish his second work covering the period from 1949 to 2003.

The Society has now received the following from Prof Guest which should prove of great interest to anyone with a connection to the University and anyone able to provide additional input.

Dear Contributor or Prospective Contributor

I am pleased to advise you that the first volume of my proposed History of the University, completed in December 2012, has at last been published.

The publication details are:

Bill Guest ‘Stella Aurorae The History of a South African University Volume 1 Natal University College (1909-1949)’ (Pietermaritzburg, Natal Society Foundation, 2015) 391 pages, ISBN 978-0-9921766-2-4.

I understand that the book is available at:-

BookWorld, 10 Cascades Centre, Montrose, Pietermaritzburg, 3201 (Ph 033-347 1962, E-Mail: bookworld@lantic.net )

Adams & Griggs, 33 Bertha Mkhize Street, Durban, or P.O. Box 466, Durban, 4000 (Ph 031-319 4400,  E-Mail: education@adamsbooks.co.za )

Ike’s Books, 48A Florida Road, Morningside, Durban (Ph 031-303-9214, E-Mail: ikesbooks@iafrica.com )

Clarke’s Bookshop, 199 Long Street, Cape Town (Ph 021-423-5739, E-Mail: books@clarkesbooks.co.za)

All are contactable using Google.

The second volume (University of Natal 1949-1976) has been completed and I am currently working on the third volume (University of Natal 1976-2003). It is still possible to include your contribution / further contribution to these volumes by way of personal reminiscences relating to your student days and/or staff experience in either centre.

Any recollections concerning campus life, fellow students, the staff members who taught/supervised you and/or staff colleagues would greatly assist in adding a human dimension to the narrative which, unavoidably, is heavily dependent upon official records that do not tell the whole story.

Please include the dates of your student/staff period on campus and let me either have your contribution or further contribution by the end of January 2016. This would be greatly appreciated.
