The 45th Regiment of Foot (Sherwood Foresters) monument commemorates the members of this Regiment that operated in Natal between 1843 and 1859.
The Regiment had arrived in Pietermaritzburg in August 1843 and had there camp at what is now Fort Napier. They were headquartered there for 15 years. Many graves of these men can be found in the Fort Napier Cemetery.
The Regiment was also responsible for the construction of the 45th cutting near Durban and were also based at Fort Nottingham. Their duties at Fort Nottingham included protecting the settlers from marauding bushmen.
